Hospitality: Keeping it Trendy

Hospitality is an ever-evolving market with new trends taking over the industry each year. Over the last few years, we have seen a hand full of great design trends that are really making a statement.

Hotels are getting the whole community involved with their authentic neighborhood vibes. From markets and restaurants featuring locally sourced produce, to customized experiences specific to the area, hotels are creating statements that concord with a communities’ aesthetic. Bringing in local chefs, local brews, and localized amenities, the hotel can provide a one-of-a-kind experience and truly integrate itself into the community for a hyper-local design.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the average American spends 93% of their life indoors.

As office spaces begin to shrink and travel continues to lull, we find hotels catering to a new market. Hotels are no longer just welcoming travelers. They are offering a fitness center, a nice drink, and a place for collaboration and work to thrive for local business. As less traditional methods of working continue to grow, we find more and more necessity for co-working spaces in the lobbies of our hotels. This can range from communal tables that offer some privacy to plug and play furniture allowing individuals to work however they see best. The sky is the limit as businesses partner up with hotels to broaden their options while improving employee wellness.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the average American spends 93% of their life indoors. This means people are starting to put a lot more thought into what materials they surround themselves with. As more information comes to light about the quality of our indoor environments, as well as the global environment, we see more and more trends pushing for eco-friendly features. We have all seen occupancy sensors for lighting and the push for reuse of towels during an individual’s stay, but what other steps is the Hospitality industry taking to make an impact on the environment? Many hotels are implementing recycling options for guests, reducing the use of plastic water bottles with reusable branded cups, and using certified green appliances just to name a few. Hotels are also shopping locally for their furniture and finishes. By supporting local furniture manufacturers, the hotel reduces emissions as products may only have to travel across town, not across the ocean. Hotels are also investing in higher quality, natural finishes that not only look green, but are green. Truly making an investment in materials slows down the cradle to grave process (if not eliminating it completely) while naturally enhancing the space.

And last but not least, creating culturally immersive experiences within the hotel. Let’s be honest, when was the last time you went to an art gallery? For the majority of people, it has been a while. But what if instead of placing meaningful, thought provoking, society reflecting art in a building for only the few to see, we placed it right out in the lobby of a busy hotel? Now guests not only get to experience their hotel stay but they have a destination located as close as the front desk. Hotels now have the ability to feature local artists, support special events held in the community, and create unique experiences that guests may not have had the ability to experience.

But what if instead of placing meaningful, thought provoking, society reflecting art in a building for only the few to see, we placed it right out in the lobby of a busy hotel?

We here at JZ are loving all of these trends and hope they stick around for many years and continue to develop into solidified, standard practices within the hospitality industry. We are curious to see what other trends may arise next and hope to be a part of how the industry continues to develop.
